7 EASY STEPS TO GET THE PERFECT TWIST OUT
If there is a hairstyle that does it all for people with afro-textured hair, there is no doubt that it is twist-outs. This hairstyle looks absolutely gorgeous as it brings your curls out in all their glory while keeping your hair protected from dangerous environmental conditions. Apart from this, twist-outs work with all hair lengths and are easy to style, even for a novice naturalista. So what’s not to love about it, pray tell?
Unfortunately, twist-outs don’t always turn out with the results we want. Some common problems like a lack of curl definition and frizz tend to ruin this experience for a lot of people. To help you overcome these problems and achieve the perfect twist-out, we have curated these seven easy steps in this blog post. We hope you find it useful.
What are Twist-Outs?
A twist-out is a natural hairstyle for people with curly hair. It involves parting the hair into sections that are twisted, allowed to dry, and then unraveled to reveal gorgeous waves with large, loosely crimped textures. This is a protective hairstyle: it helps lock the moisture in your hair and doesn’t require the use of heat.
There are two variations of achieving a twist-out. The first one is the two hair strands method. In this method, the sectioned hair is parted in two and twisted around each other before unraveling. The second variation is the three hair strands method. Here, the sectioned hair is parted into three and twisted around one another before unraveling. Both methods give good results if well done.

7 Steps to Get the Perfect Twist Out
- Shampoo and condition your hair:
This step is to clean your hair and scalp from dirt and product build-up. Conditioning your hair helps hydrate the hair which is crucial when it comes to achieving twist-outs. We recommend using sulfate and paraben-free shampoo for your hair’s health. Also, use a microfiber towel to dry your hair to avoid frizz.
- Moisturize and hydrate your hair:
Under no circumstances should your afro-type hair not be moisturized and hydrated. For your twist-out to come out perfect, you have to get your essential products ready. You can part your hair into four to make it easier to work with. You need to spray the hair with water from time to time as you work. Products like a leave-in conditioner and aloe vera gel can be used to moisturize the hair. Seal the moisture with oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil.
- Detangle your hair thoroughly to get all the knots out:
You should still leave your hair in those four sections for easy handling. Don’t handle your hair roughly while detangling, this could damage your hair and/or leave you with a headache. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to detangle your hair.
- Part your hair into small sections and twist:
How big your curls will be when you unravel them depends on how thick each twist strand is. You can twist your hair using either the two-strand method or the three-strand method. With the two-strand method, each twist is made up of two strands twisted together. The three-strand method consists of twists with three strands braided together. Another way to twist your hair for a twist out is to flat twist it.
- Let your hair dry:
You must let your hair get dry before unraveling the twists. This is because unraveling damp hair may cause a lack of definition in your curl pattern. Also, carrying your twist-out damp makes it more prone to frizz. We suggest that you let it air dry to avoid heat damage. If you must use heat, protect your hair with a heat protectant.
- Unravel your curls after at least 8 hours:
In fact, we advise that you sleep with your twists on and unravel the next day. This is to give your curls time to form properly. To unravel, undo the twists gently with your fingers. Make sure the fingers are moisturized to avoid damaging the hair.
- Style as you like and slay!:
As we said earlier, one of the best things about twist-outs is their versatility. It serves as a basis for a couple more hairstyles like two puffs or afro. So put that hair into the desired style, fix your edges and rock your perfect twist out.
