These Expensive Hair Products Are Probably Not Good for Your Hair
“Save your stacks and your strands”
Expensive doesn’t always mean effective. There are varieties of products, hair products particularly, in the market that could be pricey but they don’t work as they should. Most of them have really nice marketing strategies and beautiful branding that makes you want to believe all the lies and risk it all.
Most of the time, the defect is usually the ingredient in the product’s formulation that creates an illusion that the product is working but it’s actually not and might end up causing damage to your hair. Some of these products may or may not even disclose their entire ingredient list.
Before believing those lies, you should also take a moment to do some research on the ingredients it is formulated with and rule out the ones that could damage or benefit your hair.
These are some of the products you should look out for that are pricey but won’t help your hair as it should
Moroccan oil
This $48 hair product for all hair types claims to enhance your hair and make it silky, shiny and healthy. It can also be used as a conditioner, for detangling and as a styling and finishing tool.
However, these claims might not be true. The product in fact contains ingredients that do the exact opposite. First is silicones. It contains both dimethicone and cyclomethicone, both silicone derivatives and the other harmful hair ingredient it contains is fragrance(parfum). Silicones were added to give your hair the shiny and smooth effect they claimed despite the fact that it might damage your hair eventually.
Silicones can indeed cause your hair to shine and feel smooth, but it contains large molecules that can with constant application stay on the hair and do not penetrate. This will then deprive the hair from benefiting from the nourishment and moisture it is originally supposed to get from the product because the silicone molecules now serve as a barrier. In time, it might cause buildup on the scalp which will lead to irritation. It can also cause the scalp to dry out since moisture can no longer get in causing your hair to break and get frizzy.
Another good but bad thing about this product is its fragrance. This product smells amazingly nice but artificial fragrance can cause harm to your hair. It is known to cause irritation to your hair and dryness. You should avoid this product especially if you have dry and frizzy hair, thick or curly hair or a sensitive scalp, it is likely to make your condition worse and that’s a waste of your $48.
Wen hair care products
Wen claims to produce hair care products that use only natural ingredients and are void of harsh ingredients and chemicals. However, in 2017, there were 127 complaints (the highest complaints they ever received about a product)made to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that Wen’s cleansing conditioner and shampoo were causing scalp irritation and causing their hair to fall out. Wen themselves were sitting on 21,000 complaints at that time according to the FDA. This was later settled by the hair care company by compensating everyone that has purchased the product.
The FDA has however reported that Wen hair products are free from harmful ingredients, but the ingredients lists says otherwise. There was a report by an attorney also that says the conditioners contain no cleansers and washing your hair with their cleansing conditioners is like washing your hair with a lotion. This will not get rid of any dirts but cause buildup and irritation on the scalp instead.
There are also claims that Wen’s ingredients list is not fully disclosed. However, the available ingredient list contains allergens like methylisothiazolinone that causes irritations, allergies and immunotoxicity and possible hair loss.
If using a conditioner only to wash your hair is the best thing for your hair, if you have dry hair or any hair type at all, I will not recommend the use of Wen’s cleansing conditioners.
Bumble and bumble hair products
With over 40 years in the industry, this hair care line is known to produce a confusing wide range of products that usually has a lengthy ingredient list. The shampoos especially promise shiny, smooth and hydrated hair. The truth is this product contains dimethicone. This ingredient derived from silicone might make your hair smooth and shiny, but only for a while. Silicones will eventually leave a thick coating on your hair and will prevent moisture and other beneficial nutrients to penetrate. It can also cause scalp build up and irritation. Some people have reported that it left their hair dry and frizzy, others reported it left their hair feeling stripped of its oils and left their hair in knots. The end result of all these side effects is always hair breakage. If you have dry scalp, save your coins and get other hydrating shampoos or better still an hydrating cleansing conditioner that actually works and is free from ingredients that can damage your hair.
Conclusion
Once again, it should be noted that some expensive hair products may not be effective, there are others that work fine. Same with cheap hair products. Some of them can be terrible and some might be the best thing since sliced bread.
What you should do before purchasing any hair product is to do adequate research on whether that product is effective, expensive or not, so you don’t end up wasting your money and buying more trouble for your hair. Reading reviews of the same product too is recommended.
You should also ignore the marketing strategies and fine branding of these expensive hair products if you have not done enough research yet.
We hope your next purchase will be worth it’s money and will be the perfect thing for your hair!
